The technician with no certificate: how New Zealand’s new residence routes could change the picture for Ugandans

Visa guide · 2026-08-25 · 4 min read

Two Ugandan technicians measure a metal component together in a sunlit New Zealand workshop.

Think of the person who keeps a workshop running in Kampala. Years of practice, trusted by the team, no formal qualification on the wall. Under New Zealand’s old residence rules, someone like that could do everything right and still have no path. From 24 August 2026 that begins to change. Immigration New Zealand is introducing the largest overhaul of the Skilled Migrant Category residence settings in years, and while many commentators focused on work visa tweaks, the residence side is where life plans are decided.

What the old rules rewarded

The Points-Based Pathway favoured recognised qualifications, professional registration, high income and time worked in New Zealand, totalling six points. It works for graduates. It does not work for the technician or experienced operator whose skills are practical. That gap is exactly what the reform targets.

Two parallel routes

Instead of bending the old pathway, New Zealand is adding two beside it.

  • The Skilled Work Experience Pathway is for workers with genuine, demonstrable experience who lack the qualifications or income the points system demands.
  • The Trades and Technician Pathway is a dedicated route for more than 100 named trade and technical occupations.

Put together, residence now has three overlapping routes, and each has different triggers and evidence. If you are reading this in Entebbe or Jinja, compare all three before deciding which fits. Our explainer on the Trades and Technician Pathway offers more on that one.

What employers should notice

Training and recruitment cost money, and losing a good worker because of visa uncertainty is one of the most avoidable kinds of staff turnover. Some employees once treated as temporary, because residence seemed out of reach, may now qualify. That is a retention lever many businesses have not yet used. It also matters to you as a worker: raise it with your employer early rather than after a renewal deadline forces the conversation.

For workers, the practical message is to start a simple file now: payslips, role descriptions, letters from employers and any certificates. When the time comes to choose a pathway, that file turns a vague claim of experience into evidence an officer can assess, and it saves weeks of searching later.

Graduates gain as well

New Zealand bachelor’s degrees will carry five points, and New Zealand master’s degrees will stand on their own at six points, so international graduates can often reach eligibility sooner. Another change affects experience. Before, applicants effectively had to show continuous compliance with wage thresholds through their whole working life. Under the new approach, experience can generally be counted from the point someone first met the relevant threshold.

What stays the same

You still need suitable skilled employment, or a genuine offer, with an accredited employer. English language, health, character and age requirements remain. Documents will be examined more closely, especially overseas work experience, and occupation classification will count for more. A UNEB certificate or a Directorate of Industrial Training (DIT) certificate is good evidence of training, but it is not automatically a New Zealand qualification, licence or registration. A tidy record built with Build AI CV may help you organise your history.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Applying under the pathway you assumed applied, not the one that fits.
  • Failing to keep payslips, role descriptions and employer letters.
  • Believing that lower standards are coming. New Zealand is widening who counts as skilled, not lowering the bar.
  • Skipping a licensed immigration adviser, or someone lawfully exempt, when your case is not straightforward.

For Australia, use a migration agent on the MARA register. Check our job listings for roles, and read what the first numbers after the reset show.
