Salary in Australia for Ugandans: what an offer is worth before you compare it with home

A salary in Australia for Ugandans is built from three layers: a national minimum wage, an award rate for your job, and the amount in your own contract, and none of them is the same as the money that lands in your account. Before you compare any offer with what you earn in Kampala or Mbarara, find out which layer the figure comes from, how many hours it covers, and what is taken out or added on top. Here is each layer for Australia and New Zealand, at 2026 rates.

Three layers of pay in an Australian job

The National Minimum Wage

From 1 July 2026 the National Minimum Wage is $26.44 an hour or $1004.90 a week. The weekly figure assumes 38 ordinary hours; see the Fair Work Ombudsman's minimum wages page.

The Fair Work Commission's Annual Wage Review 2026, announced on 2 June 2026, raised award rates by 4.75 per cent from 1 July 2026, so an offer written earlier in the year may quote an older, lower rate.

Awards set the floor for most workers

Most employees' minimum pay is set by the award that covers their industry or occupation, and award rates may be higher than the national minimum. Some award minimums from 1 July 2026:

Award and levelExample roleMinimum per weekMinimum per hour
Hospitality Industry (General) Award, Cook (tradesperson) grade 3Commis chef$1119.10$29.45
Building and Construction General On-site Award, Level 3 (CW/ECW 3)Engineering construction tradesperson level 1$1154.40$30.38
Manufacturing and Associated Industries and Occupations Award, C10/V5Trade-level worker$1119.10$29.45
Pastoral Award, Farm and livestock hand level 1Station hand with less than 6 months' experience$978.10$25.74

An award is a minimum, not a market price; many skilled roles pay above it.

The National Employment Standards

Under all of this sit the National Employment Standards (NES), which no award, contract or agreement can reduce: a maximum of 38 hours a week unless reasonable extra hours are asked for, 4 weeks of paid annual leave for full-time and part-time staff, and 10 days of paid sick and carer's leave a year for full-time staff.

Visa holders have the same workplace rights as everyone else, including pay, leave and final pay.

How a sponsored job's pay is tested

Applying from Uganda usually means a sponsored job, which adds its own pay test. In the Core Skills stream of the Skills in Demand visa (subclass 482), the worker must be paid the Annual Market Salary Rate for the occupation and no less than the Core Skills Income Threshold (CSIT). For nominations lodged between 1 July 2026 and 30 June 2027 the CSIT is AUD79,423, as Home Affairs sets out on its salary requirements page.

That matters for chefs and tradespeople. A full year on the commis chef award minimum of $1119.10 a week comes to about $58,193, well under the CSIT, so a Core Skills nomination for that role must pay more than the bare award. If a "sponsored" offer quotes less than the threshold, ask the employer how the nomination will meet it. Our guide to moving from Uganda to Australia on the Skills in Demand (482) visa explains the rest of that process.

Thresholds are indexed every year from 1 July.

What comes off the headline figure, and what goes on top

Income tax

Tax is withheld before you are paid, and the ATO has separate tables for residents and foreign residents for tax purposes. For 2026-27 residents pay nil up to $18,200 and 15c for each dollar from there to $45,000, plus the Medicare levy of 2%. The foreign resident table starts at 30c for each $1 up to $135,000 (2025-26, the latest year shown), with no Medicare levy. Check with the ATO which applies to you.

You will also need a tax file number: free to apply for online, and it should arrive within 28 days.

Superannuation

From 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027 the super guarantee rate is 12.00%, paid by the employer into a super fund on top of wages. On the commis chef example, that is about $6,983 a year that never shows in your weekly pay. The ATO's super guarantee page shows the current rate.

After your temporary visa ends and you leave Australia, that super can usually be claimed as a departing Australia superannuation payment (DASP), taxed at 35% on the taxed element.

Casual loading

Casual workers get no paid annual leave; instead, award and agreement free casuals receive a 25 per cent loading. A casual rate looks higher, but it stands in for leave you will not be paid for. Weekend and late shifts can add penalty rates, which Talynx explains in its guide to what weekend and late shifts should pay in Australia.

Pay in New Zealand works differently

From 1 April 2026 New Zealand's adult minimum wage is $23.95 an hour before tax, or $958 for a 40-hour week; the starting-out and training rates are $19.16 an hour. The current rates are on Employment New Zealand's minimum wage page.

For an Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV), the job offer must be for at least 30 hours a week and paid at least the market rate for the job. The immigration median wage (NZD $35.00 an hour from 9 March 2026) is no longer a general AEWV requirement, though some settings still link to it. Our AEWV guide for applicants in Uganda covers the visa side.

One difference: work visa holders cannot join KiwiSaver, so there is no retirement top-up like Australian super. Paid annual holidays of at least 4 weeks start after 12 months of continuous work, and eligible staff get 10 days of paid sick leave a year.

Comparing an offer with what you earn in Uganda

We have not quoted a UGX figure on purpose: rates move daily, and a conversion only means something with its date beside it. Keep the offer in Australian or New Zealand dollars.

Match hours too: a Kampala salary for a six-day week only compares with an Australian 38-hour rate once both are hourly, and living costs in Sydney or Auckland are far higher.

How to check an offer, in order

  1. Write down the exact figure, the currency, and whether it is hourly, weekly or yearly.
  2. Ask which award or agreement covers the role and which level you are placed on, then check that award rate on the Fair Work Ombudsman's site.
  3. For a sponsored role in Australia, confirm the annual salary meets the market rate and the CSIT for the year the nomination is lodged.
  4. Note whether the job is full-time, part-time or casual, and how overtime and weekends are paid.
  5. Separate what is paid to you from what is paid for you, such as super, and estimate tax from the ATO's tables.
  6. Only then convert to shillings, using a rate published that day, and write the date beside the result.

Your skills decide which award level you start on, so show them clearly. A tidy English CV from Build AI CV that lists your DIT or UBTEB certificates and your real duties helps an employer place you correctly. Optional: a verified Talent Tabloid profile lets employers check your experience and can help your application stand out. When you are ready, browse sponsored jobs in Australia and New Zealand, such as this senior cook and chef role in Dubbo or this fitter, turner and welder job in Christchurch.

Common mistakes when Ugandans compare pay offers

  • Treating the yearly figure as take-home pay. Tax comes out first; super goes into a fund.
  • Comparing a casual rate with a permanent one. The 25 per cent loading replaces paid leave; it is not a bonus.
  • Ignoring the award level. Being placed one grade too low costs you every week. Ask which level and why.
  • Agreeing to long unpaid trials. An unpaid trial may be unlawful if it lasts longer than needed to show your skills or is not directly supervised.
  • Paying for a job. Paying for visa sponsorship is not allowed for 482 applicants, and New Zealand employers cannot charge you fees for a job. A "processing fee" demanded on WhatsApp is a warning sign.
  • Not keeping pay slips. Australian employers must give a pay slip within 1 working day of pay day; keep every one.

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum wage in Australia in 2026?

From 1 July 2026 the National Minimum Wage is $26.44 an hour or $1004.90 a week, based on a 38-hour week. Most workers are on an award, which may pay more, so check yours too.

Is the salary in a sponsored job offer the same as take-home pay?

No. Income tax is taken out before the money reaches your bank account. Superannuation at 12% is paid by the employer into a super fund on top of wages, so it is not cash in your weekly pay either.

How does the New Zealand minimum wage compare with Australia's?

From 1 April 2026 the New Zealand adult minimum wage is NZ$23.95 an hour, or $958 for a 40-hour week, while Australia's is A$26.44 an hour on a 38-hour week. Compare them as hourly rates in their own currency.

Can I convert an Australian salary into Ugandan shillings to compare?

You can, but only as a rough guide on the day you do it, because exchange rates move every day. Use a rate published on that date and keep the Australian dollar amount as the real number when you negotiate.

Do I get my superannuation back if I return to Uganda?

Super built up on a temporary visa can usually be claimed as a departing Australia superannuation payment (DASP) once your visa has ended and you have left Australia. The ATO recommends starting the application before you leave.

Key takeaways

  • Australia's National Minimum Wage is $26.44 an hour from 1 July 2026, but most jobs follow a higher award rate.
  • Sponsored Core Skills roles must pay the market rate and at least the CSIT of AUD79,423 for 2026-27 nominations.
  • Tax comes off your pay; 12.00% super goes on top into a fund and can usually be claimed as a DASP after you leave.
  • New Zealand's adult minimum wage is NZ$23.95 an hour from 1 April 2026, and AEWV jobs must pay the market rate.
  • Compare hourly rates in their own currency; convert to shillings only with a dated rate.
